The world of computers grows so fast that you will find yourself clueless on what the recent updates are. Be it hardware or software upgrades, the competition are so stiff that a lot of new technologies and innovations are being introduced to the market. The Microsoft Word Processing program is no exception to this. The latest version of the most popular word processing program is MS Word 2007, which was released worldwide to consumers on January 30, 2007 and is integrated with MS Office 2007. Microsoft Word XP, on the other hand, was released on 2001, included in MS Office XP. Since there are still a lot of desktop users who utilize MS Word XP, let us learn more about this software. To learn Word XP, let us first discuss its basic features and functionalities.

Like any other desktop application, starting Microsoft Word XP is so easy. You can launch Microsoft Word XP by selecting the Microsoft Word icon listed on the Programs list, by double clicking on the Microsoft Word icon on the desktop, or by double clicking on any Microsoft Word document with .doc extension. To start working on a new document, click on FILE on the Menu Bar and select NEW... or click on the NEW DOCUMENT icon found on the toolbar. To exit Microsoft Word, simply click on the CLOSE (X) button on the Title Bar or click on FILE on the Menu Bar then select EXIT.

The Microsoft Word XP toolbar contains almost the same icons, commands and shortcuts like previous versions of MS Word. In addition, the toolbar can be customized depending on the user's preference. The File Operations portion of the toolbar includes basic commands like create, open, save and print a document. It contains these icons (starting from left to right): New Document, Open Document, Save, Send Email, Search, Print, Print Preview, and Check Spelling. The Edit Operations portion allows you to edit areas of the document and contains these toolbar icons: Cut, Copy, Paste, Paste Format, Undo, and Redo. The Insert Objects part allows you to insert links, pictures, tables and other objects on your document. It contains these icons: Insert Hyperlink, Tables & Borders, Insert Table, Insert Excel Spreadsheet, Columns, and Drawing.

The Formatting toolbar allows you to make changes on your document font and contains these icons: Show Formatting Codes, Zoom View of Window, Microsoft Word Help, Font Style, Fonts, Font Size, Bold, Italics, and Underline. Lastly, the Paragraph Formatting toolbar allows you to format sections of your document and contains these icons: Left Justification, Center Justification, Right Justification, Numbered List, Bullet Point List, Indent, Border, and Font Color.
